How to Shrink Wrap a Boat

Shrink wrapping boats began in the late 1970’s and the process has undergone significant change since. TSWCO is a leading innovator of equipment used in shrink wrapping boats, including venting, caps, and tape to increase performance. Initial equipment to install a shrink wrap cover include:

  • A propane heat gun or torch.
    • TSWCO uses Shrink Fast 998 heat guns and GOSS torches for all its heat shrink needs.
  • Shrink wrap tape.
    • TSWCO uses both Dr. Shrink preservation tape and shrink wrap tape dependent upon the cover choice for transport or long term storage. Shrink wrap is commonly used for transport, boating off-season, and winter storage.
  • Vents to eliminate excess moisture build up in the cover.
  •  Specialty items such as zippered access doors, snow structures, anti-chafe tape to protect the gel coat and specialty decals or paint.
  • Winter Storage

TSWCO uses premium 7-mil shrink film containing maximum UVI protection and is typically installed over the entire boat, tensioned banding is used to support the cover and is commonly attached to cleats, towers, and in heavy snow areas, a structure is installed using wood two-by-fours and specially-designed mushroom caps to support the boat cover during heavy snow. The shrink wrap process includes a tensioned perimeter band at the boat rub-rail to hold the cover in place, installation of venting to prevent mold and mildew, and a zippered access door to provide access to the cockpit of the vessel during transport or storage.
